OUR TERRITORY

Our territory and the Gattinara tradition

Gattinara is a small town at the heart of the eponymous wine region in Alto Piemonte, at the foot of Monte Rosa. This extraordinary place has a unique terroir, incredibly suited to producing Nebbiolo wines of great complexity, elegance and freshness.

One of Italy's oldest specifications of origin, Gattinara obtained DOC recognition in 1967 and became DOCG in 1990.

Terroir

Gattinara's microclimate is what makes the area unique and perfect for viticulture.

The hills' natural position, at the foot of Monte Rosa, allows them to be exposed from south-east to south-west, leaving behind the imposing chain of the Alps, which act as a protective barrier from the colder currents blowing in from the north. The Alpine influence guarantees a gentle breeze that blows at any time of day, all year round, which is fundamental in the elegance that characterises the wines produced in this region.

Soil of volcanic origin, on the other hand, recalls the link between our wines and the earth, rock and subsoil. Gattinara is the only wine-growing area in the world where Nebbiolo is grown on soil of volcanic origin.

Lapilli and volcanic remains consist mainly of silica, iron, magnesium, porphyry and granite, all of which enhance the wine's minerality. A volcanic wine can be recognised first and foremost on the palate, where a clear burst of minerals emerges, a clear savoury sensation, always accompanied by a persistent and pleasant acidity. These characteristics, even in the presence of high alcohol content, make these wines light, elegant and persistent on the palate.
